About the Demo
If you have not purchased a serial number for Fetch, you can run it as a full-functioning demo for 60 days. After this period expires, Fetch will convert into a Desktop Reader version. This version only allows read-only operations, so you will not be able to create catalogs or add items to catalogs. Additionally, the Desktop Reader only operates in a single-user setting, so you will be locked out of any networked catalog that another user is accessing. If you do access a networked catalog, all other users will be locked out of that catalog until you close the catalog.
Installing Fetch
Each section represents a custom package in the installer. A full installation will install all of these. There is one user-specified folder where many of these items are installed. The installer defaults to 'Extensis Fetch¬ 1.5' as the folder name; you may rename the folder to whatever suits you.

Fetch Preferences
After launching Fetch, the following will be created, if they do not exist already:

Registration
Launch Extensis Fetch. During the launch, you will be requested to serialize and register the software. Please enter the serial number located on the back of the Fetch manual. If you do not have a serial number, you can choose to run Fetch in demo mode; demo mode allows full functionality for 60 days.
Please register using one of the built-in electronic registration methods. If you do not have a modem, fax/modem, or printer, you may fill out the registration card in the back of the manual.
Fetch and RAM requirements
For optimal performance of Fetch, please follow these guidelines:
- Do not use the MacOS Virtual Memory or any other virtual memory scheme (including RAM Doubler) . These programs can cause a performance degradation in Fetch.
- When working with large images or catalogs containing many items, Fetch's performance will benefit from additional memory being allocated to the application.
Fetch and supporting System Software
Fetch 1.5 requires System 7.5 or above. In addition, Fetch makes use of the following system software; for optimal functionality, this software must be installed and active.
- QuickTime 2.5: This is available with the Fetch installer and must be installed for Fetch to work. Fetch was not designed to work with any version of QuickTime below 2.5.
- Macintosh Easy Open: This allows Fetch to generate thumbnails and previews for a number of file formats. It comes standard with System 7.5 but must be active to take advantage of it.
- QuickDraw 3D: This is available with the Fetch installer. It allows Fetch to generate thumbnails and previews of QuickDraw 3D models.
Notes for Upgrading from Fetch 1.2
- If you install over Extensis Fetch 1.2, Fetch 1.5 will use the existing preferences. As a result, Fetch 1.5 will launch however you had Fetch 1.2 configured. To start Fetch 1.5 with its default preferences, delete the Extensis Fetch Prefs file located in the Extensis¬ Fetch Preferences folder.
- In some situations, the desktop database does not get updated when Fetch 1.5 is installed. If Fetch 1.2 is launching when you double-click on a catalog, try rebuilding the desktop database by restarting while holding down the Command and Option keys. At the end of startup, you will be asked if you want to rebuild your desktop.
- Due to a change in Apple's System Software, Fetch will no longer prompt you to insert unmounted CDs. Instead, you will be presented with an Open Dialog and asked to mount the volume.
- It is recommended that you throw away your Fetch 1.2 application folder prior to installing Fetch 1.5.
Other Important Fetch Information
- There is a compatibility problem between Fetch 1.5 and AfterDark 4.0 that can cause a system crash if AfterDark activates while Fetch is translating files. It is pretty rare for this to occur, but to be safe you should turn off AfterDark while cataloging items (or put the cursor in the 'Never Sleep' corner).
- There is a compatibility problem between QuickTime 2.5 and RamDoubler 1.6.2 that can cause Fetch to crash during the cataloging of JPEG files. For best results, turn off RamDoubler or upgrade to RamDoubler 2.0.
- If both 'Play Sounds' and 'Auto-Update' are checked in the Preferences dialog, the playback of the sound may be cut off when Fetch updates the item.
- In the Add/Update dialog, selecting 'Default' does not affect the file types list. Fetch keeps whatever you had previously set in this list.
- If you delete a file type that you have stored in your catalog from the File Types dialog, those files will not get updated.
- When using Drag and Drop, items must be up-to-date prior to initiating the drag. If the drag snaps back to the originating window with no message, you should try to update the item and initiate the drag again.
- Fetch cannot thumbnail very small GIF files. Such files will have a thumbnail which reads: 'Could not draw thumbnails. (No frames)' The files will preview correctly.
